New Delhi’s diplomats struggle to offer Africa something that Beijing and Washington do not
India’s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh describes Africa as ‘an emerging priority’ for his government, which is poised to reinforce its economic, diplomatic and security links with the continent in 2011. The aim is to increase trade with Africa, which is just one-half of that of India’s nuclear rival China, whose commercial and strategic impact across Africa is growing. India-Africa trade rose to US$50.6 billion in 2010 from the 2009 level of $45 bn.
