Africa-Asia Confidential was first published in November 2007, by the same group that owns Africa Confidential, Asempa Limited of Cambridge. The newsletter was founded in response to the growing political and economic relations between Africa and Asia – and by the need to understand the implications for Africa. Using the resources that Africa Confidential has accrued in 50 years of covering the continent, Africa-Asia Confidential is also developing a new network of correspondents to supply the same kind of detailed and exclusive information for which Africa Confidential has won its reputation.

Why confidential?

Africa-Asia Confidential aims to get behind the headlines to analyse the real significance for our readers of events, policies and bilateral relations between the two continents. Despite the growing plethora of free news available from the internet and other sources today, the need for reliable, trustworthy information is even greater. To gather that exclusive and solid information, Asempa spends most of its resources on correspondents.

Our material is not solely written by journalists but, on occasion, by the news-makers themselves – politicians and others working in international institutions. However, all our contributors write for us on the basis of strict anonymity, a principle that was established by the original publishers of Africa Confidential in 1960 to ensure writers’ personal safety. The need for that confidentiality still obtains, hence the newsletter’s title.

The readership

Africa-Asia Confidential is read monthly by people in a wide range of institutions and by individuals around the world. All our readers understand the importance of the increasing connections of China, India, Japan and South Korea with Africa and want to know the facts about commercial, political and diplomatic relations.

Our subscribers include national governments, the diplomatic corps, defence and security analysts, academic institutions, humanitarian and relief aid organisations, and private and public corporations in a wide variety of commercial sectors, from mining, energy and telecommunications, to financial markets and car manufacturers.

To preserve our readers’ information advantage, Africa-Asia Confidential is available only by subscription. You’ll not find it on high street news stands or in other public outlets. Moreover, none of our commentary, news and analysis is syndicated to the international news services, or re-sold to any of the web-based information aggregators.

So when you subscribe to Africa-Asia Confidential, you can be sure of receiving timely reporting and insightful analysis that is not available from any other media source.
